How to Choose the Right Ring Size
Wrong ring size is one of those problems that sounds minor until it happens to you. Too loose and you're spending the whole day paranoid it'll fall off. Too tight and you're googling "how to remove a stuck ring" at 11pm.
Here's how to get it right the first time.
The Easiest Method: Measure at Home
You don't need to go to a jeweler. All you need is a strip of paper (or a piece of string) and a ruler.
- Cut a thin strip of paper, about 1cm wide and 10cm long.
- Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you want to measure. Snug, not tight — you should be able to slide it off without a struggle.
- Mark where the paper overlaps.
- Lay it flat and measure the length in millimeters.
- That number is your finger circumference. Match it to the size chart below.

If you're between two sizes, go up. A slightly loose ring is easier to live with than one that cuts off circulation.
A Few Things That Affect Fit
Time of day. Fingers are slightly larger in the evening than in the morning. If you're measuring, do it mid-afternoon for the most accurate result.
Temperature. Cold weather makes fingers shrink. Hot weather makes them swell. If you live somewhere with big seasonal swings, measure in a neutral temperature.
Which finger. Your dominant hand's fingers are usually slightly larger than your non-dominant hand. Measure the specific finger you plan to wear the ring on.
Ring width. Wider bands fit tighter than narrow ones. If you're buying a wide band, consider going half a size up.
Buying as a Gift?
This is where it gets tricky. A few options:
Ask indirectly. "What size ring do you wear?" works surprisingly often. Most people know their size or can find out quickly.
Borrow a ring they already wear. Take one of their existing rings and trace the inside diameter on paper. Measure across the circle — that's the inner diameter, which you can match to a size chart.
When in doubt, go slightly larger. It's easier to resize down than up, and a ring that's a little loose is still wearable while you sort it out.
